"Tuscia region"
The province of Viterbo, in Latium, is situated north of Rome between Tuscany, and Umbria. Its heart is represented by the Papal city (Viterbo). It was thus renamed because the first and the longest Conclave of the Church in history took place right here in the Palace called, precisely, of the Popes.
The whole territory is rich in history, art, folclore,traditions,and a varied and uncontamined environment: lakes, the sea, mountains, hills, nature reserves, medieval,villages and invaluable archaeocological sites; these are the distinguishing marks of a land that, just for its variedness, is the starting point for a large number of cultural,artistic, naturalistic and , of course, gourmet curiosities.
One only has to think that with the Etruscan, the Middle Ages of Renaissance, Tuscia boasts one of the most important and beautiful archaeological and monumental heritages in Italy and , probably,in the world.
Besides, "Via Francigena", crosses the whole region, north south, Pilgrims out of faith and devotion, would walk its long route stretching from Canterbury to Rome. Various vestiges of the Etruscan Civilization and still visible today in the Tarquinia and Tuscania necropoles while medieval villages.
The San Pellegrino district in Viterbo, just to mention one as an example-castles,amazing palaces,with their nature reserves, enrich this territory with evocative atmosphere.
Tuscia compreises sixty municipalities; each one of them rather similar to the others as far as the general typology is concerned , but with different characteristics and traditions. Up to now, agriculture is what they all have in common. As a proof of this we have various festivals and fairs dedicated to the produce or to its by-products. The chestnut festivals, the grape-and olive oil- harvest festivals, the Cavatello (type of pasta) festival, the Porchetta (roast sucking pig) festival, the asparagus festival, the hazelnut festival, the biscuits festival,the gnocchi ( potato dumplings) festival, the Lattarino,Coregone,Lentils,Melon, Bean festivals, so on and so forth.
